Silky Terriers - Breed History
Silky Terriers were bred in a Sydney area in Australia during the 1800s. In order to create this companion dog, Australian breeders crossed the Australian Terrier and the Yorkshire Terrier. The Silky Terrier is called a toy dog with a terrier spirit. The Sydney Silky Terrier got the name of the Australian Silky Terrier, when the breed was brought to Great Britain. The AKC recognized the breed in 1959. The first Silky Terrier's standard was established in 1962. Silky Terriers were bred as companion dogs. However, preserving much of a terrier, these dogs can catch domestic rodents.
Silky Terriers - Health Issues
The Silky Terrier is a generally healthy breed. Some of the health concerns you need to talk to your breeder about are elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, Legg-Perthes disease, and intervertebral disc disease.
Silky Terriers - Activity Level
Silky Terriers are very active dogs that need human attention and do not like to be left unattended for long. They tend to get bored when their people are ignoring them. With Silky Terriers, it is necessary to devote enough time to crate training. Crate is a safe place for a dog. It is safer for you to have your Silky Terrier crate trained, as their activity level can make them destructive around the house. Silky Terriers need to feel who the person in charge is and to be obedient and docile.
