Silky Terriers should be bought from a responsible and respected breeder. Experienced and reputable breeders are concerned with the improvement of the breed, and with the health and welfare of the puppies. They work on breeding out hereditary diseases that might affect their breed.
Screen the breeder by asking him questions. See how the dogs in the breeder's home interact with your breeder. They should be friendly and outgoing. If they are aggressive or tend to shy away, the breeder does not care for early socialization of puppies. The premises should be clean. The conditions in which the dogs and the puppies are raised tell much about the level of the breeder's responsibility.
An ethical breeder willingly shares information and ideas on care and training. It is important that you feel comfortable with your breeder, as it is the person you will be consulting for the lifetime of your dog.
Be careful with the documents when you are buying a Silky Terrier puppy. A three generations pedigree, all medical records, registration papers and references should be available for the potential buyer to evaluate.
Buying from pet stores or backyard breeders may result in a puppy of a poor quality. Taking into consideration the problem of dog overpopulation and the frightening number of abandoned and unwanted dogs, responsible breeding tends to gain more and more importance nowadays.
